AMD's proprietary 'fglrx' video driver crashes when using GDM as displaymanager. This is the default when doing a GNOME desktop installation. Workaround is to use xdm instead (edit /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager:DISPLAYMANAGER). There is another workaround describedin https://oliverchang.github.io/2014/12/22/fixing-linux-amd-catalyst-linux-drivers-gdm which also explains the issue in detail.
