Legacy udev had support for extracting only a fraction of a sysfs property into an udev variable. The length of the fraction could be determined via the format length parameter. During the move to systemd-udev, this feature has disappeared. Readding it to make it possible to replace the scsi_id helper tool by udev rules that extract the scsi information directly from sysfs (see bug 1048679 as reference).
