The same crap happened again. Or very similar.

I resumed from sleep, I gave focus to Thunderbird (which was already open) and
was unable to download new mail. I knew for a fact that there were some. At
first it said "no messages to download" but on subsequent tries it just
wouldn't do anything when I clicked on "get messages".

I gave focus to Chrome and typed some random garbage into the omnibox and it
wouldn't do anything (not only it wouldn't load the search results but wouldn't
even show that it was loading or trying).

I could however give focus to another tab with Facebook already previously open
and scroll.

Top wouldn't show signs of abnormal menory or CPU usage.

I rebooted from software and, just like the other time, boot got stuck forever
at the splash screen.

By shutting down via hardware and booting again everything went back to normal.

When the first reboot got stuck at the splash screen, the cooling fan started
spinning quite fast, which could mean one of three things:
- got actually busy consuming a lot of CPU (or got hot in some other way)
- it had become hot before but the fan speed hadn't increased as expected due
to some bug (actually very unlikely as I hadn't been experiencing high CPU
usage during the "system gone berserk" phase)
- it just stupidly increased the fan speed for no good reason.

This is ridiculous. The system is screwed. Since the first occurrence of this
bug, my computer just randomly becomes unusable from time to time when I resume
from sleep. This is happening way too often, it's been at least three times in
a few days.
