I can reproduce it here in X11+xterm+vim with
> localectl
System Locale: LC_CTYPE=en_DK.UTF-8
VC Keymap: us
X11 Layout: us
but it works in vim on a real tty.
and works in gnome-terminal+vim
and works in xfce4-terminal+vim
and works in gvim
The M probably comes from the fact that M is the 13th letter
corresponding to the ASCII code of Carriage-Return.
