Could the OP's problem be plymouth-related? Try adding plymouth=0 along with
iomem=relaxed. Plymouth bling is never installed here.

Don't worry about my openchrome happiness. The only thing I use that ancient
box for is QA type stuff. The AGP Radeon it normally has is back in it. :)
