Hmm, according to https://www.freetype.org/freetype2/docs/reference/ft2-base_interface.html#FT_Open_Args args.pathname should be existing path name: pathname A pointer to an 8-bit file pathname. So 'helvetica' string would never worked. This moves the issue in different location it seems -- the fallback was not used before but it is now.
