Hrm, this is really weird.  Now there should be no reference to ACPI lid
handling, but it still crashes.  The behavior doesn't change even if you set
logind.conf to ignore the lid, right?

Could you try to setup kdump for catching any kernel crash?  Possibly it hits
something.  At least, a kernel message at the crash would be really helpful.
If it's no kernel crash but some weird behavior of the hardware, it's hardly to
trap, though...
