This turned out to be user error/configuration issue with the way I was running my Wayland session: by setting GDK_BACKEND=wayland and QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland to work around the openSUSE defaults that hve everything run in XWayland, which makes them blurry and ugly with a hidpi setup. Removing those environment variables fixes the problem, though of course now I have to live with blurry upscaled xwayland apps. :(
