Looks like an issue in VA-API backend. Could you try a different one by
specifying

vlc --vout <any | gl | xcb_xv | xcb_x11 | vdpau_display> ...

(Check options via vlc --help --advanced)

Does VA-API and VPDAU work at all? Please check with 'vainfo' and 'vdpauinfo".
