Anyhow, after the latest updates the issue resolved itself, and I could switch
back to the proprietary NVIDIA drivers. So the issue can be closed from my POV.

Since I was updating also other packages in the meantime, I'm not sure which
update fixed it actually, but the NVIDIA drivers are now on version
375.66-22.1.
