Oh, and neither dragon nor phonon looks for any vlc plugins at all. It uses libvlc(core), and that would look for the plugins. Maybe you have some self-compiled libvlc(core) in /usr/local/lib(64) or similar? It definitely works fine here *without* such a symlink.
