actually, I just tried on my second computer and neither re-installing
texlive-fira* nor running this helped:
> /usr/share/texmf/texconfig/update force

It was only working after calling my initial workaround as root:
> updmap-sys --syncwithtrees
> updmap-sys


If I find time, I'll try with a fresh Tumbleweed install in a VM or so
