Sigh. For me, it works: MozillaThunderbird-38.2.0-25.2.x86_64 on openSUSE 13.2.

The problem persisted only for about six weeks, then it was gone. Whoever
changed something... it simply stopped crashing. Maybe this is because I
installed mozldap and mozldap-tools in addition to the openldap client
packages?
