Okay. I've given it some time with difference scenarios today. It appears to be
nvidia. The time it did it with intel with me was after switching from nvidia
to intel and whatever it does, it *corrupts* the operation so that switching
with prime-select to intel still leaves things slow.

It does not do it if I use only intel from boot, nor does it do it if I use
offload.

My system is an MSI GS75 Stealth laptop with a GTX2060. I mostly just use the
nvidia because I need it for the external monitors, and nvenc is nice too.
