kdumptool expands the symlink for the kernel image and uses the directory of where that link points to for the kdump initrd. Not just that, it also looks for the kernel config in that directory. It can't find it as it's actually called "config" rather than "config-$kernelversion". The naive fix would be to not use the canonical path. However seems like kdumptool also looks at /boot/vmlinuz and that one needs one level of dereferencing. So needs a bit more insight to how this code is used. Handing over to kdump maintainers.
