Same here: problem still exists.
On my laptop (Thinkpad T440 with Intel graphics) I have the problem only when
booting when connected to my two external monitors through the docking station.
When booting normally I can see the plymouth graphics on the laptop screen.

On my desktop system with AMD graphics (see details below) I *always* get the
gray screen with three green dots.
