This can be optional, but it's not only me, who running into the software
delays with incorrect /etc/hosts in different Unix systems.

Network configuration schemes can be different, but presence of hostname in the
/etc/hosts file can be required even without static network scheme. Even with
dynamic network scheme software can trying to get access to machine by its
hostname.
