BIOS boot vs. UEFI, both with and without LUKS, are scenarios that are
extensively tested by SUSE QA, so it is not plausible at all that this is
broken in general.

I could imagine that the UEFI detection does not work as it should on your
hardware, though; or that those special settings that you mentioned ("UEFI and
legacy", "legacy first") confused it.

It surprises me, though, that this happens with Lenovo Thinkpads; both Lenovo
and the community around Lenovo hardware are very active to keep all things
Linux working.
