SMPlayer fails to play video files like mp4 and avi and audio files like wav, mp3 and ogg (they are the only I got at hand). The error is always the same: "Option ao: filter name expected. Error parsing option ao (option could not be parsed) Setting command line option '--ao=pulse,,' failed. Exiting... (Fatal error)" It seems a command line option for MPV is being passed incorrectly. I tried with MPV on the above formats and it works fine. So, this makes me think that maybe the is an inconsistency between SMPlayer and MPV versions which is causing the breakage.
