thank you for the suggestions.  

sorry to imply that it crashed immediately or every time i tramp... it is with
long running emacs sessions with multiple remote ssh buffers.  may take a few
days before it pops.

will provide more information when available.

not gnome3 - but MATE - because desktop not touchpad
and vnc hosted session - using mac jollyfastvnc client

this MATE thing may be it, eh?

i will try the x11 one and see if that helps.
