Grand Wet Morning,
This machine comes from SLES11 and in those days the check that sdb had a
partition was not done ? From SLES12 SP-n when a sdb or sdc was created a
partition was added. I do take your point that if /boot was not on sda then as
you say, it's not going to work, but in those early days of LVM not all was
clear in my head. This worked so we went with it.
