I suggest reverting to the 11.1 UI for 11.2, and postponing this change until 11.3. Here are the big problems: * User finds a package, checks the box, and clicks "Install", and nothing appears to happen. They click "Install" again (because you can), and still nothing happens. There is no indicator that they need to take additional steps, or what those steps will do. Previously, a sidebar with pending actions would appear. * User finally figures out they need to click "Apply" (I guarantee they will never think to click on a tab labeled "Undo"), and are switched to the "Undo" tab. The user probably thinks at this point that they are working on things that will somehow be undone. * But assuming they are okay with this, they at least see that their package is in the "To install" column. Then, the primary button they see is "Uncouple", and the tooltip says "Open In New Window". Clicking on it changes the "Undo" tab into an "Undo History" window that is always-on-top but does not prevent actions on the rest of the Software Manager UI. The only action you can take with this window is to close it, at which point it becomes the "Undo" tab again. (Side note: the label of the "Sure?" button changes back to "Apply" after 10 seconds, and when you click on it again it just changes back to "Sure?", which is very confusing). * Finally, the only button left is "Sure?", which installs the software. Others have elaborated on how confusing this label is. At the minimum, these things need to change before we ship this UI: * "Undo" tab should be renamed to something useful * "Sure?" button should be renamed to something useful * "Uncouple" button should go away, and you should decide whether this part of the UI is a tab or a window. If it's a window the window functionality needs to be redesigned and have an equivalent of the "Sure?" button on it. Personally I think it should go back to being a sidebar so that after the user clicks "Install" they have some idea of what's going to happen. * The "Sure?" button should not spontaneously change back to "Apply" after an unseen timeout (seems to be 10 seconds). * After clicking the "Install" button, it should no longer be sensitive and the text should change to something informative like "Selected for Install". But really, this UI is in the very early alpha stages and is not ready for our users. Please revert to the 11.1 UI as there is no time for this one to be ready for 11.2. And please, please, please involve the community in these sorts of changes. I read Planet SUSE and unless I missed it this was not blogged about, and I can tell that it has not been reviewed by any designers or user experience experts, and it has not seen enough user testing. It was probably discussed on yast developer lists or in yast developer IRC but you should really include the wider openSUSE GNOME community here. There is no reason to rush this in when the current 11.1 UI does the job. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
