Me, I prefer to see in the document the old option and what replaces it, and
when not.

Thus I would mention that "menuconfig" has been deprecated, that it has been
replaced with "silentoldconfig" (needing the user to copy-expand config.gz from
/proc, or whatever is the correct way), and that in turn on such version
"silentoldconfig" has been replaced with "syncconfig".  That way, when we are
surprised by our method from the last time not working, we can just search the
file for our keyword and find why it doesn't work, and what to use instead.

Just explain the situation as you just did :-)
