Just to make things straight: is my understanding correct?

- Boot without USB-audio --> volume control works for the onboard audio
- Plug USB-audio --> volume control stops working
- Unplug USB-audio again --> volume control is kept broken

Yes, and this is the intended behavior as designed, I'd say.

Which xfce4 plugin packages did you install on your system?
