After looking into this some more I agree with Ricardo, this is a bug. On my mac the page peaks at 70% CPU time, averages 35-50%. I tested it with Safari, Firefox and Chrome. It seems that about 30% of the problem is javascript, 10%-20% image scaling, filters etc.
