I've made yet another interesting observation:

AFTER STR the touchpad is completely dead as far as Xorg is concerned. 'evtest'
shows no data whatsoever. 

However, the touchpad can still be used to wake the machine from STR again and
again. This works both with pressing the buttons AND with tapping, so the
device itself is not dead and some sort of communication with the kernel/driver
must still be going on, maybe there is a dedicated interrupt to kick the i2c
host.
