xterm's configure does an auto-detection of freetype's presence, defaulting to
'whatever it finds';

As there is no forced --enable-freetype passed to configure, it silently
ignores its absence during build (ouch).

the change on Dec 19 removed the full X11 meta stack - the hidden dep on
freetype was missed.

working on a fix (which hopefully also manages to get into fail state on lost
deps in the future)
