After posting this, I realized I had somehow managed to enable the monitor before I crashed previously. I tried to disable the monitor, and this also crashed my system in the same way. So maybe it doesn't have to do with refresh rate after all... the crash also occurred when I tried to change resolution. Looks like this monitor basically becomes toxic to the system as soon as it gets enabled.
