The reports on the mailing list were outdated /etc/nsswitch.conf files.

Then please provide exact error messages and how to reproduce, especially as
e.g. nftables is not reading /etc/services, so cannot fail.

Is libnss_usrfiles2 installed? This is normally pulled in by the patterns, but
if you e.g. did de-install the patterns itself ...
