The change to allow the creation of the extra partition as you need it is now
merged. A kiwi build that includes the patch is available in the Staging area:

* Virtualization:Appliances:Staging/python-kiwi (v9.17.40)

The setup in the XML description as you need it would look like the following
example:

<type image="vmx" ... spare_part="500M" spare_part_fs="ext4"
spare_part_is_last="true" spare_part_mountpoint="/var"/>

Once all our integration tests passed I'll submit to the V:A:Builder project
and to Factory.
