In the dovecot log shown with journalctl -b -u dovecot I found messages like: imap(freek): Error: opendir(/home/freek/Maildir) failed: Permission denied (euid=1000(freek) egid=100(users) UNIX perms appear ok (ACL/MAC wrong?)) After some digging the only explanation I found is that apparmor is blocking this access. So apparently an apparmor rule for dovecot is missing. I can't find a solution for this. So the IMAP server on my system is not usable any more.
