I should have added: I am able to boot to a command line, by appending "3" to the kernel boot line. I normally use "plymouth.enable=0". But I also tried replacing that with "splash=silent". The result is the same -- I do not get a login screen. In the latter case, the plymouth splash screen fades, as if to suggest that it is finished. But the faded plymouth screen remains there.
