I have since "fixed" this by disabling pulses idle time out by commenting it
out in default.pa. Not a happy fix but it works.

I have also done more testing. YAST sound has an audio test facility that plays
a sound. No problems here. I also booted my machine up on a Knoppix usb stick.
This appears to use alsa right up to the desktop when it's running an xfce.
Sound is perfect. This also has kde system setting available and it can make a
test sound but isn't used by applications. It showed the same problem grunt -
sound ok and when that ended another grunt some times later.

I'm using the stereo optical output from a creative titanium xfi hd just as I
did under 12.3. The odd aspect about set ups that don't have the problem is
that they show 2 aux volume controls. One for iec985 which doesn't do anything
and another labelled digital which functions as expected. Phonon only offers me
iec985 and all of the volume controls function as expected so I suspect that
the problem is how it's linking into alsa or maybe pulse below that. Or maybe
optical connections need another option.

As the 2nd grunt occurs some time after a sound has finished playing it's
clearly caused by the idle time out and the initial noise by things restarting.

Hope this helps. I am a software person but not pc unfortunately. This was all
from a clean leap 42.2 install.
