To summarize a lengthy discussion elsewhere: RFC 6761 (http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6761) specifies a list of reserved domain names that could be used as valid replacement for .site. None of them were considered acceptable as quick fix for the upcoming SLE11SP4. Therefore we will use .suse there as it's the quickest way to keep the .site behavior. For Factory and upcoming distros we need to find a better solution though. There are basically only two clean options, use .localhost or don't pre-define any domain at all. There are still some fixes missing in glibc to make .localhost behave as specified in rfc6761 though. It would have the advantage that programs that try to resolve gethostname() in dns get an answer immediately. The disadvantage at the same time is that it fools programs that rightfully check gethostname() in DNS get fooled. So we should avoid that and fix programs that wrongly use gethostname() [if there are any left].
