This is not clarifying: miktex is unavailable for openSUSE, and as such I have no idea which scripts you are talking about, having never used MikTeX myself (and most others using non-Windows machines). We _do_ have latexmk which _does_ "... also call TeX multiple times, as needed, to resolve cross references..." as you want. One compiles their tex file using something like latexmk -pdf tex_file_name to get the corresponding pdf. It will compile as many times as required to get cross-references right automatically.
