Additionally, I see that the error does not happen if the scanner is plugged in
at boot time. It is then detected by 'Simple Scan' from GNOME but refuses to
start scanning, although I can't tell whether that's a manifestation of the
same problem or not.

On a side note, the kernels you supplied are a bit cumbersome to try out since
the they do not seem to pick up the additional kmps - I use nvidia as my main
card. If there's something you can easily to to have them pick the kmps like
the official TW kernels do it would be great. If not, I'll fiddle around with
suse-prime like I do so far.
