Does the boot succeed without USB stick?
And, is the kernel freeze, or does it still react to magic sysrq?
Also, could you try with kernel-debug kernel (and without quiet bot option)?

In anyway, it'd be helpful if you can get kernel logs at the hang.  Thanks.
