I suspect the issue is more with placement of the credits rather than that the
credits appear at all?

The placement appears to be decided by the DocBook standard (which is what the
document is written in) and itstool (which we use to integrate translations).
The DocBook standard demands that you put such information in the "info" tag,
itstool obliges.

I could remove the credits easily, moving them to the bottom is a bit harder
but not impossible. The only issue being that I would probably have to put them
under a generic English headline "Translators".
