HD-audio drivers are supposed to be stable enough to have the power-save feature turned on as default. The flag is set dynamically usually by DE, but not all DE's adjust it. For setting it as default, change the kernel config, CONFIG_SND_HDA_POWER_SAVE_DEFAULT=1.
