OK, I think I found the cause and it is in fact on my end. The ".cache.mk" was left over from previous build on previous opensuse revisions. When I remove that file so that it gets recreated all is good. Never saw the problem before because the 4.8 version of gcc has been used since for ever. Never realized this file should be removed as part of the make clean rule.
