Bug very similar.
Xsane start but as soon as I move anything (preview, scan, change sheet size)
it crash.
Starting in console I get:

~> xsane
which: no avahi-browse in (/home/giorgio/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin)

at start. When I move anything 

Segmentation fault (core dumped)
