Looks like timeout=0 + nofail shows the graphical prompt longer.
Still, why is that not the default? The current way of handle encrypted stuff appears to be very unfriendly, even if its done that way since forever...
Hm, but timeout=0 is already the default (see man crypttab): -->-- timeout= Specifies the timeout for querying for a password. If no unit is specified, seconds is used. Supported units are s, ms, us, min, h, d. A timeout of 0 waits indefinitely (which is the default). --<-- You refer to the 'nofail' mount option then?
