I found a solution (after quite a while of searching ...): it was neccessary to run a2enmod version After that, apache was running again. However, this is not self-explanatory. Maybe this is similar to what you are suggesting. Wouldn't it make sense to put the corresponding call into the "post" section of phpMyAdmin? The issue happened after a "plain" installation of apache & adding phpMyAdmin. Thank you for looking into that, take care Dieter Jurzitza
