I think this problem is limited to OpenSuSE Leap's 5.3 kernel. I have since switched to the 5.14 kernel from the backport repo (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable:/Backport/standard/), and the problem is not present. If someone wants to close this as WONTFIX, I am OK with that.
