Re comment#6: Just log in to a system that has your $HOME on a NFS server, then run /usr/bin/xauth -v -f ~<username>/.Xauthority nlist arne/unix:10.0 -> xauth hangs for 20s in a call to XauLockAuth() in an attempt to create the file "~<username>/.Xauthority-c" which it can't due to "root" not being privileged via NFS.
