With the help of the opensuse mailing list it seems that the problem is my
Nvidia Card (GeForce GTX 460) that only supports Nvidia VDPAU Feature Set C.

There must have been some update that either changed the settings of vlc or
that changed the behavior of vlc's video output setting "automatic" to use
VDPAU even when the graphics card doesn't support it.

Changing the video output of vlc to something that does not use VDPAU (like
"OpenGL GLX Videoausgabe (XCB)") solved the problem.
