Perhaps related to bug 751211 when modifying openVPN connection NM requires root password when creating openVPN connection NM denies creating it on basis of insufficient privilege Workaround: use existing connection file and give yourself permissions to the connection. permissions=user:<your login>:; This is done automagically for WiFi connections.
