I am not sure that the bug is vdpau.

I found as reference:

and here I tried the workaround for kaffeine:
vlc -V x11 video.mp4

(where video.mp4 is obviously the file you want to play). 

It segfaults immediately. The problem is present with vlc whenever you use
vdpau. That is:
automatic
decodificazione video vdpau
decodificatore va-api tramite DRM

but(!) vlc does not crash when you do choose 
- no hardware acceleration 
or 
- VA-api

NOw if you try to switch off the acceleration in kaffeine as of above it does
crash either way. 
So one thing is the new problem with vdpau, the other that there seems to be an
issue with the backend kaffeine even when vdpau or any acceleration is used.
