Hi Chris, sorry for the long wait. As of now with GNOME 3.18.1, I'm not able to reproduce the focus issue when in wayland (or in X11 session for that matter). I'm taking a bold stance here, and closing bug as fixed (upstream). Should you however still be able to reproduce, please reopen the bug.
