I've just checked the hplip settings and it seems that the system tray icon behaves as expected. In fact, choosing "Hide when inactive" seems to work properly, at least for the KDE environment. Anyway, KDE's system tray setting does not have any effect on hplip's behaviour, but that might be on purpose.
